Can there be any more of a fundamental truth of the natural world than the rhythm of day following night following day? But when was the last time you experienced true darkness? The truth is we live in a world where the lines between day and night have become blurred.  The use of electric light to extend our days has become standard practice over the last 60 years, but at what cost? As we remove darkness from our world do we truly understand the environmental impacts of our decisions?

Landon Bannister talk will explore the environmental responsibilities we all have when using light outdoors; looking at the negative impact light can have on the nocturnal environment and asking the question how much light at night do we actually need?

Landon, has been working in the lighting industry for over 20 years and is a passionate advocate for the important role lighting plays in the human experience of the built environment. He is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society as well as the International Dark- Sky Association and is actively involved in lighting education.

OPEN HOUSE HOBART - Urban Walk.

As part of this years forthcoming OPEN HOUSE HOBART series of events, Better Hobart will be running an Urban Walk through the CBD of Hobart.

Buildings physically form the City, but its life takes place in the space that’s left over. And just as the trained eye can read the architectural language of buildings, so the various public spaces of the city can be designed to be read and understood. Rather than allow the form of the city to be merely a by-product of its functions, Urban Design aims instead that it be created as a direct expression of those that live in it.

Drawing upon such classics in the field as ‘Responsive Environments’ and The Concise Townscape’, Urban Designer Nick Booth of nbd.space and Member of Better Hobart will lead you through a crash course in how to read a city while examining some recent changes and proposals for Hobart’s CBD and visiting some sites of potential civic development as suggested by the Better Hobart Group.

SALON #6 - MOVE THIS CITY.

How we get around our fair city is one of the big challenges confronting Hobart. Unfortunately, other than freely admitting that something needs to be done, there is, it seems, little political appetite at State Level to grasp the thorny issue of how we move people around and through the City other than by Private Car. Hobart City Council, along with the Bicycle Network, have however taken the lead in a number of important areas. Importantly, they have approached the subject acknowledging that Hobart does not exist in a vacuum and that much can be learnt from other similar cities that are far more advanced in this area. 

Hobart Alderman, Helen Burnet has been one of those who has gone on a voyage of discovery to places like Portland in the US to find out exactly how they have approached the subject. She’s walked the walk (and caught the bus, the light rail, the bike, and the street car). The revolution, she believes, is coming and Helen will give a talk on what she discovered, and what it could mean for our city if applied here. Prepare to be enlightened and challenged.

It’s a special Better Hobart event and what better timing than Bicycle network’s national Ride2Work day, Wednesday, October 18.

SALON #5 - MAKING PLANS.

With relatively little fanfare, the proposed Statewide Planning Scheme is moving through the legislative process towards formal adoption with as yet, relatively little public awareness. Yet, the potential implications on the development of Hobart and Tasmania as a State far outstrip the impact of a few high towers on Hobart's Cove that have otherwise caught the attention of the public. Affecting every land title in Tasmania, it will have a profound affect on amenity, identity and heritage protection and perhaps what could be described as the Tasmanian way of life. 

Sophie Underwood is the State coordinator of the Planning Matters Alliance Tasmania (PMAT), an organisation consisting of a diverse collection of 50 concerned community groups (including Better Hobart) across the state, all alarmed at how the provisions for the statewide planning scheme seek to reduce protection for urban, cultural and environmental heritage whilst also striping back community engagement in planning and development decisions. 

Sophie will give a talk on the potential impact of the proposed Statewide Planning Scheme in how our City and Suburbs grows into the future, and PMAT's campaign for an alternative planning system that has a clear strategic vision and an integrated, democratic and transparent approach and how you can get involved.

Every resident of the State needs to be aware of what this could all mean so spread the word and bring your opinions - we want to hear your thoughts and ideas on this and any other issues facing Hobart now and into the future.

SALON #4 - THE CITY CANVAS.

With a number of pieces of Street Art popping up around Hobart (and with more to come), Moe Sultan of Sultan Holdings and Jami Bladel of Kickstart Arts will be coming in to talk about Street Art around the world and recent examples here in Hobart, the role it can play in bringing vibrancy to the Cityscape and the process of place-making.

They have an eye to bringing large scale art to some of the blank walls of Hobart's bigger buildings, so you may get to be the first to hear of some planned major changes to the look of the CBD.

SALON #3 - MEMORIES IN      TOWNSCAPE.

An evening for those interested in the deeper meaning of space. Based on the concept that if you remember a place, you love a place, we have two talks on the importance of memory to trigger connection to place. First Urban Designer Nick Booth of nbd space will give a talk based on his award winning research into the power of smell to trigger memories and how this might be manipulated to help build a spatial organised world and aid in the process of place-making.

Then using local case studies, Cultural Heritage researcher Alexandria Costin will give an overview of her research into heritage conservation as a processes of porosity and nostalgia and discuss the concept of urban landscapes as collective memory. Lastly she will examine how connections can be formed through adaptive re-use.

URBAN WALK #1

Join Better Hobart for the first in an ongoing series of informal guided walking tours focusing on urban design in Hobart.

Our first walk will have a special emphasis on recent urban planning outcomes in the CBD, including upgrades on Liverpool St, Mathers Lane, Colllins place and Franklin Square.

Join the discussion, and hear ideas from some of our city's leading thinkers in urban design about future steps for improving Hobart's built environment.

Speakers will include Dale Campisi from the Institute of Architects.

The two-hour walk will depart from walking Core Collective Architects on Argyle St at 3:00pm, returning to the same location at 5:00pm.

 Better Hobart is a voice for high-quality, sustainable and people-centred design. We advocate for a city that is transit-friendly and less car-dependent, where people are connected by healthy, prosperous and inviting neighbourhoods. Guided by the urban design values embodied in the Gehl Architects Report, we want a city that is filled with activity and life, where people move easily through open, attractive and inviting public spaces.

It’s model for positive, non-aligned advocacy that has already proven itself in cities around the world, and it's a model that we believe will work for Hobart. This is our first get together, so it’s a chance to help shape things from the ground up. 

The first get together will include speakers with expertise in architecture, transport, planning and urban design.  There will also be a chance for contributions from the floor. Drinks are by gold coin donation and snacks will be provided.
